Out of all the Chinese restaurants around the West Valley area, it has been hard to find a place that had authentic Chinese menu. We have been across the place for months not thinking it was worth going into since it was named "Yum Yum Kitchen" and was expecting to come across another Americanized restaurant, but boy was I excited to find a place where I could get . Sadly it did not cover all the bases of what I missed from Maryland, where it was easier to find authentic Chinese food. I have not yet tried their hot pot buffet, but maybe one day I will. As of now, this place is a winner in my books.

I don't like to play fast and easy with any restaurant's reputation but in all seriousness the food failed to please. We went for the lunch specials which are very inexpensive and have your typical Chinese food fare. The place was clean, spacious and relatively deserted our entire visit. You can still tell however that the building is old or was once in bad repair. Our server was kind and the food quick. My wife had the Sweet and Sour chicken. The chicken was fried just right, very crispy, and the sweet and sour sauce came on the side. She was quite excited. The flavor of the sauce was average at best and didn't sit very well with her temperamental stomach. I had the Mongolian Beef, which looked great but was beyond salty. The heat of the dish took a back seat to the meals odd flavor. The fried rice also tasted strange, kind of old, absolutely inedible. The hot and sour soup was also a dull note. This was one of the few meals in a long while that I barely touched nor did I bother having boxed up. At least it makes for a cheap experiment, and if you do go, tip big, I have a feeling they need it.

Not bad for delivery food at least it was still hot (temp) lots of food the dinner for 4 will feed 5 or 6

As a Chinese, I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to find authentic Chinese food. I think this restaurant is undervalued on Yelp. As a Chinese, I am not interested in orange chicken and something like that. So I could not comment on their American-style Chinese. But for the authentic dishes, especially traditional northern Chinese dishes, I can say they do a great job!!! Yuxiangrousi (pork with garlic sauce) is really good. Xianggucaixin (Bok Choy with mushroom) is good too. I really want to try their jianbingguozi, but they do not serve it at dinner time. I will definitely come for it next time.

I came here for lunch a few days ago. I have only been here the one time, and I don't think I'll be back. Honestly I'm not sure how this place keeps in business. Maybe I came on an off day. But I really don't think so. When I walked into yum yum kitchen, there was one table with 3 people seated in the dining room. It was obvious that these people were either friends with or related to employees at the restaurant. Otherwise the restaurant was completely empty. When I am tired I didn't see a sign saying to see myself and I didn't see a sign that said wait to be seated so I just stood there in the entrance waiting for somebody to find me. I waited about 2 minutes. When I was finally acknowledged it was by a young Asian woman who simply said to me sit. I sat down and a few minutes later she brought a menu. I'm relatively adventurous and willing to try new things so when reading the menu I found an item that looked interesting but I wasn't sure how it was cooked. I choose not to eat anything that is deep fried. So I asked the waitress if the item was deep fried. She did not understand what I meant. I understand that there was a language barrier, & I do not expect everyone to speak English as well as I do. However, when I go into a restaurant I expect the server to be able to answer simple questions about the food I am ordering. This was not possible. I ended up choosing something that I knew would not have then deep fried. But that item is not available. I was told they were very busy and ran out of the items. So I then ordered something else. They were also out of this item. Finally I asked her to recommend something because I was tired being told they were out of what I wanted. When the food came it was delicious. I'm not sure what it was but I very much enjoy that. This meal came with soup and appetizer and the entree and cost less than $6. I ended up tipping $2 even though I shouldn't have left anything. The waitress was so incompetent and utterly useless that I wouldn't even consider returning even for very delicious food. Also while I was here I heard the waitress make a telephone call to someone who had apparently ordered take out food and tell them that the item they had ordered was not available and they just order something else. She did not apologize she simply said we're out of this do you want something else. While I was still there the person came to pick up the order. The person picking up the order was extremely frustrated. He asked if it was possible to have a discount because they didn't have what he wanted. The server was extremely rude to him and basically said if you don't want it you can leave. I did notice a tour group arriving as I was leaving. I don't know why these tour groups are coming here but my guess is it's the only thing keeping them alive. I'm shocked that this place is in business based upon the service I received and the service that gentleman ordering takeout received. Maybe the tour groups are the only customers they need.

Placed order for delivery. This place is literally a mile from my house. An hour later My husband called to ask the status and simply got that they were busy and she hung up. Two hours pass. I call and tell her to cancel my order since it wasn't coming and to refund me. Girl on the other end muttered something and hung up on me. I call back and she set the phone aside and said nothing. I wanted to make sure she was actually going to refund me. I had to call back again and asked her to verify that she was going to. She sighed with an attitude and said yes. Seriously? An actual apology for crappy service goes a long way. I've ordered from these guys or picked up at their establishment easily a dozen times. Not anymore.

I stopped by this place with my parents since I am a big fan of northern Chinese food. Once we sat down, we were impressed by their menu at first. Very nice variety. Unfortunately, when I started ordering from the menu, the dishes were either unavailable or would take too long to cook. The boss lady even raised the voice when telling me 'no'. After some 'negotiation', we settled with three dishes. They tasted ok. The waiter and waitress were friendly too. I just wish the boss lady would do more to make customers feel welcomed at her restaurant.

Most disgusting place I ever been to. Not to mention the food is average, the service is the worst. I asked for no green onion and onion in the fried rice. The only showed bad attitude because of my request. When they serve the dish, my fried rice only has egg and white rice. Not even added soy sauce in it. I tried to talk to the owner, but her bad attitude continue the same. THE MOST angry part is I asked to lower the price since there is nothing in it, she refuse by saying I give you what you request and demand me to leave tips. It turned out that I pay for white rice with egg for $11. What a 'nice' place!!!!!

I thought this place would be good but I was wrong. The service was horrible and the server kept checking out my wife. And they try to over price us. We order a $25.00 family plate for 3 and the bill came to $44.25. And how is that logical they own the place and they can't tell between $25 and $44.25 plate. And the pot stickers is way over priced. The plate had 6 potsticker and it cost $6.25 so that like a $1 a potsticker.

We enjoyed the traditional Chinese breakfast fare. The pork with preserved duck egg soup was delicious and the fried bread sticks were fresh and crunchy. I really liked the green crepe with eggs too!

MUST READ!!! After my last disaster with this place my sister dragged me to it again. She wanted to try it for herself and this was the nearest hot pot in our area. I warned her of the incompetent service and the lack of correct flavorings to the food, but she insisted on going. Which was fine with me because I love her and wanted to make sure she didn't get poisoned. Once we walked in there we noticed how incredibly empty it was. The whole restaurant was dead silent and we even had that 2 minutes of awkward confusion on whether or not the place was open. Then a waiter came to greet us and said blankly "sit". I didn't realize I had turned into a dog. It was rather rude, but we let it go and just sat at a empty table. We had never ate hot pot here before, so we didn't know that we had to sit by the bathroom tables in order to eat hot pot. Our waiter came back and gave us some menus. My sister then told him that we wanted to eat hot pot and wouldn't be ordering anything else. He seemed confused, and went back to go talk to the manager lady. After 20 minutes (Not exaggerating. We were counting the minutes since the waiter left) the waiter came back out with a pot. FINALLY! FOOD! He then opened the pot and revealed a soup. A lamb stew. I'm so shocked at this point that I didn't know what to say. Luckily my sister chimed in. "We just wanted a spicy hot pot. Not a spicy stew with a lot of meat in it" The waiter then went back to talk to the manager lady. By this time, we were starved and just decided to eat the stew. The meat was extremely over cooked and the soup had NO FLAVOR. It was absolutely shocking. I almost felt like they intentionally made this inedible because of the confusion we had caused them of wanting to eat HOT POT. The stew. Oh god. I don't even know how to word this. It was the most revolting, disgusting, and sickening thing I have ever eaten in a restaurant. I'm not being dramatic. It really seemed like they took some precooked lamb and dumped it in water, and cooked it for 5 minutes with some chili flakes. The waiter came back and saw that we had alreadly eaten some of the stew. He said that we had to pay for it now. We didn't argue, but I told the waiter that they had to take this stew back and add some seasonings. He said that the stew was absolutely fine. I then asked him to try it. He gladly obliged because he actually thought he could pull off the "this is the way it's suppose to taste" line with this dish. With one sip his face changed. And he muttered softly "i think the cook forgot salt." NO SHIT! Yes. He forgot salt and all the other components that make up a stew. My sister was enraged and told the waiter that all we wanted was a hot pot the whole time. He then went back to go talk to the manager lady (it was starting to feel like a routine at this point). This time she came out. We were expecting some kind of apology or explanation for what had happened, but instead, she pointed her finger and said "out". ALL WE WANTED WAS TO EAT HOT POT. My sister's whole face had turned red from the anger and she stood up and told the manager exactly what had happened. The manager then looked at the server and asked, "did you say the lamb soup lacked salt?" The server kept darting his eyes, and after standing in silence for a minute he quietly said "no. I don't remember". IT WAS TEN MINUTES AGO AND YOU DONT REMEMBER?! He was clearly avoiding the subject because he didn't want to get in trouble. My sister and I then asked the manager lady to try the soup for herself. She refused and said it was "unsanitary to try other people's food". That is completely understandable, but in our current situation I believe it was called for. If she was so sure on the quality of her food, couldn't she partake one spoonful to prove her point? Plus. It's a stew. Stews are meant to be shared and divided into bowls. Anyways, we were so frustrated about the whole situation and just started to leave. She then shouted, "Enjoy your free food you liars" SWEET JESUS. Don't flatter yourself. If we were looking for free food we would have gone to the soup kitchen much more willingly than your disgusting restaurant. We drank 3 spoonfuls of your disgusting stew which is not anywhere near a free meal. The is the worst restaurant I have ever been to. Food wise, and service wise. Please. Do yourself a favor and don't waste a penny here. The way they run things is so disappointing.

Hi I'm too lazy to thaw my own frozen food so I'm going to come here. It gets one star at best but the food is below average. I ordered the beef and broccoli and it was too salty while my rice was cold. The staff looked annoyed when i asked to have My rice warmed up and never came to my table to refill drinks. I would rather eat at Panda Express before this

As a Chinese, I would not come here any more! The service is TOOOOOOOOOOO bad. It's like no one is actually serving you. (That is because they have Rreception of tour group, so they barely have time to serve you!!!! Also, they make A LOT OF noises.) And I gave them a little tip (because no service at all), then they ask me to give more!!!! Finally, the food is sososososo, not very special. Just go to other restaurants to get better service and quiet atmosphere!!!

I absolutely love the strawberry and the mango chicken... But, their delivery service requires a lot of Patience. I've ordered over 3 times and they still had problems finding my house. It actually got to the point to where I had to come pick it up because of their challenges with finding my address. And although they gave me discount I still was disappointed.

omg I could give this place a negative star if I could. I should've known better from the polarizing yelp reviews that this place is either really terrible or really terrible and has their friends writing the stellar reviews. We've been here for one hour, only got half of our orders brought out. The fried rice and BBQ pork came out all cold. The service is terrible, some guy just walked by, looked without asking if we were waiting for anything. It's not like my dad isn't looking around to flag down a waiter. How is this place still in business I really don't understand.

My favorite chinese food in Salt Lake City! Very authentic which 90% of the time is great, but 10% of the time it gets weird. Don't expect great service, but do expect some good house specials. My favorite thing is breakfast which is served on weekends. They serve traditional northern and central chinese breakfast foods and it is delicious!

I've only been here once during lunch. Ordered one item on their lunch special menu. Most of the dishes were American- Chinese. The taste was ok, but the price was super cheap $5 . That's why I am giving it a three stars, food alone probably a 2 stars. Won't be back unless I happen to be in the area.

WORST Chinese restaurant I've ever met. The food was OK, but the service was sooooooooo bad. The servers gave us no smiles and didn't answer our questions at all!! The MOST IMPORTANT thing is they charged us 20% tips and 8.5% tax without notice us (I thought the tax fee should be around 6.8%, but the lady boss said it should be 8.5% in Salt Lake City) Really? 20% tips for such a bad service? 8.5% tax fee in Salt Lake City? They knew that my husband and I were travelers there, so the lady boss charged whatever she wanted! SAVE YOURSELVES! DON'T COME HERE!

While their food is really quite good for the, for the most part, and the dumplings are very good. There service is an absolute zero. I placed an online order and waited, and waited and waited. When I called after an hour and half I was told, "we didn't get it the system is broken". When I asked if I could just place the order over the phone, I was told they are, "too busy try after 8, around 8:30" Seriously? I guess they have learned the trick in Utah, be unapologetic about your customer service. Nicely done.

This little review is totally overdue! I've been frequenting Yum Yum Kitchen for quite a while now, and by "frequenting" I mean I go there A LOT (and probably too much? :p) ! The food is always top notch and the owners and servers are always helpful and friendly. As I have mentioned in another "Chinese Food" place review, I go to Chinese restaurants not to have ordinary fried rice, or heavily breaded sweet and sour chicken, but to eat something that are specialized and focused. Yum Yum Kitchen is such a place! The food (especially in the Chef's Recommendations section) is phenomenal. The meats are always seasoned and cooked well, and the vegetables are fresh and tender (and still has that "good crisp" taste!) I also love their hot pot, where I usually opt for half regular and half spicy broth. The buffet table is always filled with different meats, vegetables, fish balls, and other goodies, and the sauces are great as well. And when I can drag my butt off bed on Sunday mornings, I like going there for their Northern style breakfast items, with just my husband or with some friends. The juicy buns and Chinese fried bread sticks (you tiao) along with the fresh soy milk always make us happy! A truly wonderful restaurant.

I am okay with their Chinese food items, but I'd like to recommend the HOTPOT!!!!!! I think their hotpot is the best in town (I know, I know, there aren't many places offer hotpot anyway). I like the fact that I can mix my own sauce, and I can pick up the ingredients myself from the buffet booth.

Hubby and I went for dinner last night after craving hotpot and looking up reviews, decided to give this place a shot. It's a dingy place, but we saw a few chinese students in there, so we decided that might be a good sign. we couldn't have been more wrong. We were seated right beside the hotpot station, and while waiting for our pot to boil, we got our food. First thing i noticed, was that the food didn't look all that fresh, especially the fish and seafood they had sitting out. The fishballs and veg, we could still shut an eye. the sauces station also had bowls of sauces uncovered and left out for who knows how long. it was pretty sketch. ALSO, the waiter was adjusting the lightbulb right above the uncovered hotpot items! Anyone'd know that ceiling covers and lights have a ton of dust. it was eww. We both got home and were pretty dissatisfied with the quality of food, but also fell sick because of it. Never going back there again.

The Waiter was surly, at best. Hot and sour soup was ok but saltine crackers on the side? Really? Lunch special included soup, choice of appetizer, ham fried rice and choice of main dish. I picked "paper wrapped" chicken for the appetizer but that obviously meant foil wrapped. Ground chicken with some spices including ginger. A little dry and not too inspired. The ham fried rice was completely flavorless with three tiny cubes of processed ham and frozen peas & carrots added for color. There were a few flakes of egg, I think. Basically seasoned with a drizzle of soy sauce. I ordered one of my favorite dishes: Ma Bo Tofu (or Ma Po Tofu, depending on the restaurant and vernacular). I made sure to mention to the waiter that it could be Spicy but I am unsure whether he didn't speak enough English to understand or just didn't give a damn, I am leaning toward the later. It looked good and the seasonings were good... I believe I could taste a touch of five spice but it was only moderately spicy, at best. They used real pork vs. ground pork but there was very little meat and a couple pieces were caked with whatever coating they used. When I arrived there was a large table of Asian women finishing their lunch and as I was there, several other Asian couples came in ... There are Asian restaurants on every other block so seeing this cliental is generally a good sign OR the other area restaurants are Really bad or they are relatives. The interior looked like a pepto bismal bottle exploded: wall to wall pink and there were weird Chinese baby posters on all the walls. Really peculiar. They have one of those ding dong bells on the front door.. Seriously loud and annoying, I am glad they weren't busy. One would think they could turn it off if there is someone SITTING next to the door. There was no music and the big screen TV was on in the background with a soap opera playing. Most of the sound was the waiters taking to each other in Chinese... Loudly. I really loved it when another patron in the restaurant had to waive his hand and say "woo hoo!!!" in order to get service. This was definitely a one time visit .. At least it was cheap! Oh - and in the ladies room (I am going to try to post the picture) a sign OVER a small bucket that says "Please put toilet paper in the bucket" - can anyone say Eeeeewwww!!! Doesn't sound sanitary at all.

The service is terrible...It took me more than half hour to get my order, even there are only a few groups in the restaurant. The food here is not as good as their menu (I think the pictures on their menu should be copied from the website, not what they really cook). I only like their soy milk but other dishes are not recommended...

Prices are cheap and food is fresh. A lot of Asians eating the hot pot which is all uu can eat and about $13 a person. I just ordered the dinner combo of cashew kitchen which came with an egg roll and cheese wontons. Pretty average. Place looks old school like Christmas story Chinese place, haha. Anyway I think portions are huge and price is cheap.

I haven't tried hot pot at many places, and I have to say the one here at Yum Yum is just okay. There was a good selection of items you could choose from to put in your Hotpot. Things ranging from glass noodles, top ramen noodles (yes, you read right), shrimp, oysters, chicken, beef, etc...so no problem there. We chose our broth half spicy and half normal. I liked how the pot was shaped like a Yin-Yang symbol, which made sense in our case, haha. The only gripe I had about the hot pot was both sides of the broth were very bland! I ended up using the seasoning packets from the top ramen packages they had to try to add more flavor. It helped a lot. Not sure if this is normal for hotpots to start the broth bland and have the foods add flavor, but this was what we had to do. There were other condiments at the food selection bar that probably would have helped as well. The items on the normal menu looked pretty good, though. Next time, I'll have to try some of that.

YYK-- NOT just for trips to Home Depot. That's, of course, how we found this place, driving to the 21st South Home Depot. It looks pretty old on the outside and had such a ridiculous name -- Yum Yum Kitchen -- that we had to try it out. I don't know how to describe the "atmosphere." Pink walls, stained drop ceiling tiles, and these crazy Chinese murals. Oh, and a giant flat screen TV in the middle of the dining room. It's a cross between "what were they thinking" and "this is everything I want in a cheap Chinese restaurant." Regarding the good, every time, we are not disappointed. The food is super fresh; spicy food is spicy, and for lunch, it's CHEEEAAAAPPPPP! (That's right, so affordable that it deserves three "E"s, four "A"s and five "P"s) Lunch entrees come with soup and an appetizer, which can include sweet and sour chicken (awesomely hot and crispy) or cream cheese puffs (called "Crab Rangoon" where I'm from, minus the crab). Things that are wok seared are hot and seared, while veggies are still crunchy. Their sauces are perfectly balanced, and you never leave hungry. What's the rule about the quality of a restaurant being proportional to the percentage of patrons who are of its ethnicity? Well, that rule applies here. As usually my wife and I are the only, or just about the only, non-Asians at the restaurant. A couple of times ago, they brought a TOUR BUS full of Chinese people to YYK. It only loses a star because I wish the atmosphere were a little more comfortable (the temperature is never quite right), and, well, because what seems like the most awesome dishes don't even get an American translation on the menu. He Tang Xiao Chao? Huo Bao Yao Hua? Qing Zhen Pa Niu Rou Tiao? Dried Pot Suan Cai Fen Tiao? Maybe I don't want to know what it is, but I do know that most of the groups around us are sharing these beautiful sizzling dishes, fried breads, and hot (and dry?) pots, and some crazy savory breakfast dishes (served until 3!) I want to get in on the action. Don't let the exterior (or the proximity to Home Depot) fool you... And even if you don't have a translator, the stuff you can pronounce makes it worth a visit.

First time trying Chinese food in SLC. We two ordered Fish-Flavored Shredded Pork, and Chinese Cabbage with Mushrooms. Better than expected, and packed about 1/3 away. One star off is because we prefer as little sweet as possible, but the pork is still a little too much for us after we asked.

Very authentic Szechuan and northern Chinese food. Spicy food is very spicy! The restaurant looks nice inside. Clean and spacious. The staff is friendly and the service is always fast. I like to get the chef's recommendations dishes. There are some dishes that are probably too crazy for non-Chinese people because there's livers, intestines, and other food ingredients that some of my American friends don't want to eat. But if you like these ingredients you'll enjoy how the chefs prepare them at Yum Yum Kitchen. I like the restaurant very much.

I ordered food for delivery online. An hour later, we called to ask where our food was. They said out for delivery, but I would guarantee it hadn't been made yet. Knowing where their location is, it shouldn't have taken more than 20 minutes. So 20 minutes later, we called again. At 1:45 into our order, they said the driver couldn't find our house and they returned to the store. No calling when they were close. We asked for them to deliver it to us and THEY HUNG UP. We called back, asked for redelivery and THEY HUNG UP AGAIN. I don't care if this is the best food you've ever eaten in your life. The service is terrible.

I have been this place for several times and I have tried their breakfast, hotpot, and regular lunch and dinner. I love this place. They have very authentic Chinese food and many many options on menu, if you know what they are. They usually have two menus for people who are American or who can read Chinese. The Chinese menu could be hard for American to read because it doesn't have much descriptions for each dishes, but just the spelling of the pronunciation of Chinese for the meals. However, you can ask your sever to recommend some authentic Chinese dishes. My friend and I love the stir fried vegetable with garlic sauce there. It has very good garlic flavor with fresh bokchoy. We likes the spicy dishes there. Happy couple has a good flavor of spicy, but if you are not good at spicy food, you probably want to skip it. For hotpot, they have many options from vegetables to different kind of meats. They can choose from hot broth or just normal chicken broth, and you can also do half hot broth and half chicken broth. We used to go four season hotpot in Provo. I think it is a good option for hotpot in salt lake city, so we don't need to go down to Provo for hotpot anymore. Overall, I like to eat Chinese food here. They are not Americanize Chinese restaurant but they do have Americanize Chinese food. If you want authentic Chinese food but don't understand from the menu, the best way is ask the severs there for recommend. My friend and I have good experience to eat here and we will try more dishes from the menu.

Good and cheap Chinese food. I have always been a sucker for the large bowls of soup. I really like the house special wonton noodle soup. Pretty much everything in one bowl of soup. Pork, chicken, beef, wonton, noodles and lots of veggies. This is the perfect hangover cure. I will be back for sure.

Dropped in for their takeout lunch special. It was dirt cheap and for $ $4-5 you get a main dish and fan fried rice. Soup apparently is only included in dine-in lunch orders which was disappointing. The food came out quickly, but they forgot to sauce my friend's sweet and sour pork. The quality was average but I do not think I would return.

It's good food for way cheap! You can't beat their lunch deals for $5. Going gor dinner is very inexoensive and I always enjoy myself. They service is great as well. I've never waited a long amount of time to be helped or have my food be brought out. great little place to grub down!

I decided to give this place another chance but dine in instead of delivery. BAD idea! I had vegetable lo mien and my friend had chicken something. There was mold in the vegetables. I tasted something funny and when I spread out the leaf, there was obvious mold. My friends chicken had a very close to spoiling taste that had tried to be covered up with spices. I pointed out the mold to the waitress who went and got a lady I am assuming is the manager. She told me to leave her restaurant before I said anything. A man came out of the back and cleared the table. All of this from pointing mold out to waitress, to man clearing the table, and us being told to leave occurred within about three minutes. Manager lady followed us out of the restaurant to the parking lot gesturing and speaking loudly in a foreign language. Health Department really needs to thoroughly check this place. They are obviously cutting corners to either try to stay open or put money in the owners pockets. There are to many options for lunch to patron this type of establishment.
